Don't watch Eragon!

I had the «pleasure» of watching almost two hours of boring hackneyed conversations and battles with an easy-going, predictable plot. In addition, either someone bolloxed up the German localisation, or the dragon sounds like a desperate, horny, eight year old girl in the original version as well [1]. One of my friends made the amusing remark that it would pep up the film when the dragon would screw our blond little hero.

That's the last time I went to the movies without reading critiques first. However ... I'm somehow tempted to watch the second part, just to ensure myself that the third part will be absolutely nonsense.

Rumours claim that the books are much better.

[1] What a combination. Paedophiles will love it.

Movie corner: The Perfume

Roughly 10 years ago in grammar school, I heard about the book by Patrick Süskind. Two of my class mates had to hold a speech in our German lesson. Although the speech wasn't very well prepared the story seemed interesting and a couple of years later I eventually had the chance to read the book (this time my sister being instructed to create a presentation). Funnily enough the book belonged to my sister's teacher and was full of dog-ears and paperclips to mark important passages. Make the long story short: the book is amazing and definitely worth reading.

Difficulties in transforming books into movies always arise due to the pure length of the storyline. I have to admit that the director Tom Tykwer did a fantastic job. The movie is only slightly prosy and the environment is genuine. The trickiest scene - the orgy on the market place - was extremely well made.

Thumbs up for "Perfume: the story of a murderer".

Mike's movie corner: V vor Vendetta

Remember, remember the fifth of November [...]

Warning: may contain spoilers and peanuts!

The movie is stuffed with symbols, which many folks wouldn't even take notice of. Taking into account that our superhero is actually transsexual (or tries to be), this doesn't come out at all. It's probably the misery authors have to face, when directors get hold of their books, comics, stories and turn them inside out.

It is worth seeing, if one likes special effects and doesn't glimpse behind "the scenes". However, it was definitely not worth the 9 quid I paid.
